Independent Living Skills.
Through California's Self Determination Program, a support professional teaches everyday skills on real tasks, at home and in the community, so the participant can do more on their own.

Not doing it for them. Teaching, practicing, and stepping back.
Skills that stick.
Learn at the store, on the bus, and in their own kitchen, with someone beside them until they no longer need it.
Progress you can see.
Clear goals, measurable steps, and monthly reports that show what was practiced and what comes next.
What it can include.

Cooking and meal planning
Grocery shopping
Using public transit
Making and keeping appointments
Home care and laundry
Safety at home and in the community
Speaking up for themselves
What we hear.
“I want to do more things on my own.”
“We want them ready to live more independently.”

What is Independent Living Skills under SDP code 320?
Independent Living Skills is provided under SDP service code 320 in California's Self Determination Program. A support professional teaches everyday skills on real tasks, at home and in the community, based on goals the participant chooses.
Can it be paid for through the Self Determination Program?
Yes. When Independent Living Skills is part of the spending plan, bttr. bills through the participant's FMS, and only what is approved.
What skills can the participant work on?
Common goals include budgeting and paying bills, cooking and meal planning, grocery shopping, using public transit, scheduling appointments, keeping up a home, safety, and speaking up for themselves. Goals come from the participant and their person centered plan.
Does the participant need to live on their own?
No. Many participants live with family and are building skills to do more on their own now or to prepare for a future move. Others already live on their own and want more confidence day to day.
Who provides the service?
A consistent support professional matched by bttr. based on the participant's assessment, so every match is fully person centered. Every support professional is employed, trained, and supervised by bttr. and introduced before the first session.
How is progress tracked?
Each goal is broken into clear steps. Support professionals document every session, and the participant and family receive monthly progress reports that show what was practiced and what comes next.
Which regional centers does bttr. work with?
bttr. serves Self Determination Program participants at every regional center in California.
How is it different from Personal Attendant Services?
Personal Attendant Services provides hands on support with daily routines. Independent Living Skills teaches the participant to do those tasks with less support over time.
Can it be combined with other services?
Yes. Many plans combine services such as Personal Attendant Services or In Home Respite. bttr. delivers them as one team, with one plan and one point of contact.
